Higashi Taisetsu Arch Bridges
The general term for the group of railway bridges along the former Japanese National Railwaysf Shihoro Line is the gHigashi Taisetsu Arch Bridges.h Although it is a gigantic structure extremely high in technical value, the harmonious landscape between the bridge and its surrounding natural environment was highly valued, thus leading to its designation as a Hokkaido Heritage site.

Japanese National Railwaysfs Shihoro Local Line used to greatly contribute to the development of farm products and forest resources in the northern area of Tokachi. Due to the depletion of forest resources and the advent of todayfs motorized society, however, the line was decommissioned in 1978. In 1987, the line between Obihiro and Nukabira was also terminated. In conjunction with the termination of these railways, the mission of the arch bridge as a railway bridge was completed. Currently, it is expected to become popular throughout Hokkaido as a model for conserving and utilizing modernization heritages.

The Higashi Taisetsu Arch Bridge Friendship Society, a non-profit organization, was established out of a desire to pass the cherished arch bridge on to posterity. Detailed information is available at the Societyfs website.

Recommended seasons Throughout all four seasons, visitors can observe and experience the harmonious coexistence between the beautiful structure and the natural landscape. Please note, however, that climbing of these bridges is strictly prohibited.
Recommended points Although there are numerous bridges in the area, we recommend visiting the Taushubetsu River Bridge. This bridge makes its appearance around January, when the damfs water level is low, begins sinking around June, when the water level increases, and sinks to the bottom of the lake around October. This is why it is referred to as the gillusory bridge.h
