Mikuni Pass
Driving toward Mikuni Pass while carefully watching for the sudden appearance of deer . . . viewing a great ocean of foliage that endlessly spreads before your eyes . . . Here you can experience the magnificent panoramic view of the Daisetsu mountains system.

This is a pass with an elevation of 1,139 m, making it Hokkaidofs highest pass among all of the prefecturefs national highways. After passing through a tunnel, you will find yourself in Sounkyo. From the pass, the beautiful ridge line of the mountains in the Daisetsu mountain system spreads out in front of you, including Mt. Nipesotsu and Mt. Upepesanke. The Tokachi Mitsumata Forest used to be prosperous and was one of Japanfs leading high-quality timber production areas. Mikuni Pass was given its name because it is located at the border of former Tokachi, Ishikari and Kitami.
Recommended season In particular, we recommend the autumn foliage season. The eye-opening beauty of the autumn colors is nothing less than forest art.
Recommended points Immediately after passing through the Mikuni Tunnel on National Route 273, you will come across a parking area. This is the view point. Please enjoy the ocean of trees and mountains overlapping in the distance as seen from Mikuni Pass, the highest pass in Hokkaido.
